A SINGAPORE STORY - FOR THINKING SINGAPOREANS ONLY

Date: 05/03/2004 09:53:30AM

This is an interesting story to share:

Mr. Tan runs a business selling plastic toys. He hired managers Chan and Dick to help run the company. The production line has five workers: Ah Beng, Ah Seng, Ah Huat, Muthu and Ali.

As the CEO, Mr. Tan pays himself a million dollars a year. His justification is: "Without a good leader, the business will not be successful; and you won't get a good leader if you're unwilling to pay for one." Mr. Tan has never worked in another company before.

Chan had won a government scholarship twenty years ago while Dick is an expatriate from America. Mr. Tan thinks very highly of them and pays them each half-a-million dollars a year.

As an expatriate, Dick also gets housing, transport and relocation allowances amounting to a quarter of a million dollars a year.

The production workers each gets $1,500 a month with $300 going towards a retirement gratuity that the company would match dollar-for-dollar.

The business hasn't been going too well. In fact, business has been downright awful for the last few years. Consumers seemed to prefer the cheaper plastic toys from companies across the street.

Mr. Tan is furious. "These consumers are a bunch of idiots," he said, "don't they know that the companies across the street are not managed by talents like Chan, Dick and myself?"

Mr. Tan has always been deeply impressed by Chan and Dick. Chan has the remarkable ability to use words like "synergy" and "paradigm shift" in every sentence. And Dick? Dick is white.

So Mr. Tan got down to some serious discussions with Chan and Dick. After many hours of brain storming, they decided that they know what's wrong with the company.

"We don't have enough talents," Mr. Tan declared, "we need to hire more scholars and white men." And he did. So now, there's Ang, who was Chan's best friend when they were in RI, and Brad, Dick's brother. They are hired on the same terms as Chan and Dick.

To reward themselves for coming up with this visionary strategy, Mr. Tan gave Chan, Dick and himself a 10% raise.

With the raise and the hiring of two new management staffs, Mr. Tan figured that he had to cut cost. So he laid off Ah Huat, who's about to retire and receive his retirement gratuity from the company.

The remaining four production workers now have to work 12 hours a day to cover for Ah Huat. They didn't get any compensation for this extra work because Mr. Tan told them that this is a difficult time for the company and all workers have to make some personal sacrifices. "Luckily, we now have a world class management team and business will pick up in no time," Mr. Tan proclaimed.

However, business hasn't picked up at all despite having a world class management team. On the contrary, business seems to have worsened quite a bit.

Mr. Tan is now even more furious. He has no doubt that he and his management staffs are world class. So the problem with the company must surely lie with the blue-collar workers like Ah Beng and his gang, who hardly have any paper qualifications and speak dialect and Singlish. But just to be sure, he engaged the services of a management consultancy firm to confirm his belief.

The management consultant cost Mr. Tan an arm and a leg but he identified the problem: "Your labour cost is way too high. Do you know that the average annual wage of your employees is more than $400,000? That's ten times the amount for the companies across the street."

"Ah ha! Just as I thought," Mr. Tan congratulated himself on arriving at the same conclusion as a world class management consultant, "Ah Beng and his gang are overpaid."

So Mr. Tan reduced the salary of his production workers to $1,000 a month and abolished the retirement gratuity scheme.

Sounds familiar?

TIPS FOR SUCCESS IN BUSINESS

Never walk down the hall without a document in your hands. People with documents in their hands look like hardworking employees heading for important meetings. People with nothing in their hands look like they're heading for the cafeteria.

People with the newspaper in their hands look like they're heading for the bathroom. Above all, make sure you carry loads of stuff home with you at night, thus generating the false impression that you work longer hours than you do.

* * * * * * * * * *

Use computers to look busy. Any time you use a computer, it looks like work to the casual observer. You can send and receive personal e-mail, calculate your finances and generally have a blast without doing anything remotely related to work.

These aren't exactly the societal benefits that everybody from the computer revolution expected but they're not bad either. When you get caught by your boss--and you will get caught--your best defense is to claim you're teaching yourself to use the new software, thus saving valuable training dollars.

You're not a loafer, you're a self-starter. Offer to show your boss what you learned. That will make your boss scurry away like a frightened salamander.

* * * * * * * * * *

Messy desk. Top management can get away with a clean desk. For the rest of us, it looks like you're not working hard enough. Build huge piles of documents around your workspace.

To the observer, last year's work looks the same as today's work; it's volume that counts. Pile them high and wide. If you know somebody is coming to your cubicle, bury the document you'll need halfway down in an existing stack and rummage for it when he/she arrives.

* * * * * * * * * *

Voice mail. Never answer your phone if you have voice mail. People don't call you just because they want to give you something for nothing-- they call because they want YOU to do work for THEM. That's the way to live. Screen all your calls through voice mail.

If somebody leaves a voice mail message for you and it sounds like impending work, respond during lunch hour. That way, you're hardworking and conscientious even though you're being a devious weasel. If you diligently employ the method of screening incoming calls and then returning calls when nobody is there, this will greatly increase the odds that they will give up or look for a solution that doesn't involve you.

The sweetest voice mail message you can ever hear is "Ignore my last message. I took care of it." If your voice mailbox has a limit on the number of messages it can hold, make sure you reach that limit frequently. One way to do that is to never erase any incoming messages. If that takes too long, send yourself a few messages.

Your callers will hear a recorded message that says, "Sorry, this mailbox is full"--a sure sign that you are a hardworking employee in high demand.

Story of Handphone Systems

Since 1-April-97, competition has been very keen in Singapore's cellular phone market due to the new entrant M1. Before that, there was only one operator, that's why no one covers more of Singapore than Singtel Mobile, absolutely no one.

AMPS was the first system that Singtel launched, an Ageing Mobile Phone System. After that they realised that the system is outdated and they put up another system ETACS which the subcribers were not very happy about because it was Extremely Tough to Access Call System. Then came the 2nd generation cellular technologies, which Singtel was working with Ericsson to implement - GSM. After some time, Singtel found that things are Getting Slightly Messy, so they decided it was time to go into 3rd generation technology, PCN. However it is a very Poor Coverage Network and everytime subsciber wants to make a call, they Phui Chao Nua because they can't get thru.

So Singtel decides to rename PCN to the GSM1800 Network, or Get Some More Idiotic Bums Onto Our Network.

M1 initially also use GSM and they learned from Singtel's experience that GSM is not so good either, so M1 goes for CDMA, after several delays in the official launching, M1 knows that this so-called advanced system Can't Do Much Anyway.

Lesson 1:

A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings.

The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs.

When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbour.

Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you $800 to drop that towel.'

After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob, after a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves.

The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs.

When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, 'Who was that?'

'It was Bob the next door neighbour,' she replies.

'Great,' the husband says, 'did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?'

Moral of the story:

If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure.

Lesson 2:

A priest offered a Nun a lift.
She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg.

The priest nearly had an accident.
After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg....

The nun said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?'
The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again.
The nun once again said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?'

The priest apologized 'Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.'

Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way.

On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129. It said, 'Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.'

Moral of the story:
If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.

Lesson 3:

A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp.

They rub it and a Genie comes out.
The Genie says, 'I'll give each of you just one wish.'
'Me first! Me first!' says the admin clerk. 'I want to be in the Bahamas , driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.'
Puff! She's gone.

'Me next! Me next!' says the sales rep. 'I want to be in Hawaii , relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life..'

Puff! He's gone.

'OK, you're up,' the Genie says to the manager.
The manager says, 'I want those two back in the office after
lunch.'

Moral of the story:
Always let your boss have the first say.

Lesson 4

An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing.

A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, 'Can I also sit like you and do nothing?'
The eagle answered: 'Sure, why not.'

So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it..

Moral of the story:
To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

Lesson 5

A turkey was chatting with a bull.

'I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree' sighed the turkey, 'but I haven't got the energy.'
'Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?' replied the bull. They're packed with nutrients.'

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree.

The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.

Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree.

He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.

Moral of the story:
Bull Shit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there..

Lesson 6

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field.

While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him.

As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was.

The dung was actually thawing him out!

He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy.
A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.

Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

Morals of the story:
(1) Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy.

(2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend.

(3) And when you're in deep shit, it's best to keep your mouth shut!

Bone Osteoporosis - The Silent Disease

The Doctor Says By DR MILTON LUM

Bone density declines with age, resulting in fragile bones and eventually, osteoporosis.

THE human body comprises of a skeleton that forms the framework for the various organs and other body structures. The skeleton is composed of various bones. Bone is made up of various minerals like calcium and phosphorus, and protein, which make the bone hard and dense.

There are two types of bone ?compact and spongy bone. Each bone in the body contains some of each type. Compact bone appears hard and solid, and is found on the outside of bones. Spongy bone is found on the inside of bones and is filled with holes.

In order to maintain its bone density, the body requires adequate amounts of calcium, other minerals and vitamin D as well as hormones like parathyroid hormones, oestrogen, testosterone, calcitonin and growth hormone. Vitamin D is absorbed from the food consumed and is also produced by the skin in the presence of sunlight.

The bone is in a continuous process of being broken down and reformed or remodelled. During this process, small areas of bone are removed and new bone deposited in its place. This enables the bone to adjust to the different bodily requirements.

Remodelling affects the shape and density of bone. When a person is young and growing, the bone increases in both length and width. When a person is older, the bone does not increase in length but may sometimes increase its width.

As bone formation is greater than is broken down in the young adult, bone density increases progressively until about the age of 30 years when it is at its peak. After that, bone breakdown is greater than bone formation, resulting in loss of bone density. This small amount of loss continues for the rest of life. If there is an ability to maintain an adequate amount of bone formation, the bone density continues to decrease, resulting in the bone becoming more fragile and eventually osteoporotic.

Bone loss increases after menopause when the ovaries stop producing estrogen, which protects against bone loss. A little bit of loss of bone does not usually cause problems. However, excessive bone loss results in osteoporosis which is characterised by compromised bone strength leading to an increased risk of fracture. Although the bones are still of the same size, the outside walls of compact bone become thinner and the holes in spongy bone become larger, thereby weakening the bone considerably.

The condition of a wo¬man抯 skeleton depends on two factors ?the amount of bone attained before the menopause and the rate of bone loss after.

Bone ailments

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterised by compromised bone strength that predisposes a person to an increased risk of fracture. A person抯 bone strength is determined by the bone density and bone quality. Bone density is determined by the peak bone mass and the amount of bone loss. Bone quality refers to the architecture, turnover, damage and mineralisation of bone. Bone density is used to measure osteoporosis clinically.

In all Asian countries, osteoporotic fractures are increasingly common. The impact of these fractures is tremendous. There is a mortality risk of about 25% in the first year. The quality of life is also substantial. About 10% will be bedridden and 25% wheel chair bound. In addition, there is chronic disabling pain with effects on patients?emotional and mental lives. In 1997, J.K. Lee and Khir reported that the incidence of hip fracture in Malaysia was 90 per 100,000 in those aged above 50 years.

The initial signs of osteoporosis are seen in bones that have a lot of spongy bone such as spine, hip and wrist. The symptoms of osteoporosis do not appear until a lot of bone is lost, thus explaining why it is called a silent disease. They include backache, pain, decrease in height and slight back curvature. When there is a fracture, there will be pain, tenderness and deformity.

Risk factors

Osteoporosis is three times more common in women than in men because of two reasons: women have a lower peak bone mass and the oestrogen loss at menopause. As women live longer than men, there will be greater reduction in bone mass.

The factors that increase the risk in women include:

Ethnicity. Caucasians and Asians are at greater risk. In Malaysia, the Chinese have a higher risk than the Malays and Indians, with Chinese women accounting for 44.8% of hip fractures.

Family history in a first-degree relative

Slender build

Low body weight (below 57kg)

Natural menopause because the protective effect of estrogens on bone is lost. Menopause is the biggest culprit in the process of bone loss. Premature menopause (below 40 years) aggravates bone loss.

Surgical removal of the ovaries causes a sudden decrease in estrogen resulting in rapid bone loss unless it is replaced.

Tobacco smoking.

Excessive alcohol and caffeine use.

Low calcium intake. Calcium slows the rate of bone loss.

Lack of exercise. Just as muscles become stronger with exercise, so do bones. Exercise increases bone mass before the menopause and slow down bone loss after the menopause.

Eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia.

Medicines like diuretics, steroids, heparin, anticonvulsants and immunosuppressants.

Types

There are two main types of osteoporosis ?primary, which occurs spontaneously and secondary osteoporosis, which is due to another condition.

There are three types of primary osteoporosis: postmenopausal, senile or age-related, which occurs in both men and women; and idiopathic.

Post-menopausal osteoporosis is due to the lack of oestrogen. Although bone loss is gradual in the years leading up to the menopause, it accelerates at menopause.

Women can lose as much as 20% of their bone mass in the five to seven years after menopause. However, not all women are at the same risk of developing postmenopausal osteoporosis. Those who are most at risk are the thin, white/fair skinned and/or with a slender build.

Senile osteoporosis results from age related calcium deficiency and/or vitamin D deficiency and an imbalance between bone breakdown and formation. It was found in a 2005 survey that about 49% of Malaysian women are vitamin D deficient! Senile osteoporosis is twice as common in women as in men. Women often have both postmenopausal and senile osteoporosis.

Idiopathic osteoporosis is rare. The cause is unknown. It occurs in children and young adults who have normal hormone and vitamin levels and no obvious reason for fragile bones.

Secondary osteoporosis occurs in less than 5% of cases. The various conditions that may cause secondary osteoporosis include: chronic conditions like kidney failure or liver cirrhosis; endocrine conditions like diabetes, thyrotoxicosis, hyperparathyroidism and hypogonadism; and other conditions like nutritional causes, multiple myeloma and cancer.

Very Useful Information.. for meat lovers

Please read, very useful information for health!

SATAY LOVERS (BARBECUE)

If you all eat Satay, don't ever forget to eat the cucumber, because eating Satay together with carbon after barbequing can cause cancer.
But we have a cure for that... Cucumber should be eaten after we eat the Satay because Satay has carcinogen (a cancer causing element) but cucumber is anti-carcinogenic. So don't forget to eat the cucumber the next time you have Satay's.

PRAWNS (SUGPO) & VIT C
DO NOT eat shrimp / prawn if you have just taken VITAMIN C pills!!
This will cause you to DIE in ARSENIC (As) toxication within HOURS!!

PORK AWARENESS

Try this and see whether the pork you bought has worms. There goes with your 'Bak Kut Teh' for those who love it. Most men love to eat this so watch out before it's too late. If you pours Coke (yes, the soda) on a slab of pork, wait a little while, you will SEE WORMS crawl out of it. A message from the Health Corporation of Singapore about
the bad effects of pork consumption. Pig's bodies contain MANY TOXINS, WORM and LATENT DISEASES.

Although some of these infestations are harboured in other animals, modern veterinarians say that pigs are far MORE PREDISPOSED to these illnesses than other animals. This could be because PIGS like to SCAVENGE and will eat ANY kind of food, INCLUDING dead insects, worms, rotting carcasses, excreta including their own, garbage, and other
pigs. INFLUENZA (flu) is one of the MOST famous illnesses which pigs share with humans. This illness is harboured in the LUNGS of pigs during the summer months and tends to affect pigs and human in the cooler months.

Sausage contains bits of pigs' lungs, so those who EAT pork sausage tend to SUFFER MORE during EPIDEMICS of INFLUENZA. Pig meat contains EXCESSIVE quantities of HISTAMINE and IMIDAZOLE compounds, which can
lead to ITCHING and INFLAMMATION; GROWTH HORMONE which PROMOTES INFLAMMATION and growth; sulphur containing mesenchymal mucus which leads to SWELLING and deposits of MUCUS in tendons and cartilage,
resulting in ATHRITIS, RHEUMATISM, etc. Sulphur helps cause FIRM human tendons and ligaments to be replaced by
the pig's soft mesenchymal tissues, and degeneration of human cartilage.

Eating pork can also lead to GALLSTONES and OBESITY, probably due to its HIGH CHOLESTEROL and SATURATED FAT content. The pig is the MAIN CARRIER of the TAENIE SOLIUM WORM, which is found in its flesh. These tapeworms are found in human intestines with greater frequency in nations where pigs are eaten. This type of tapeworm can pass through the intestines and affect many other organs, and is incurable once it reaches beyond a certain stage. One in six people in the US and Canada has RICHINOSIS from eating trichina worms, which are found in pork.

Many people have NO SYMPTOMS to warm them of this, and when they do, they resemble symptoms of many other illnesses. These worms are NOT noticed during meat inspections.

This is so scary...so be careful when u consume these things....

EATING FRUITS the right time

EATING FRUITS .......
It's long but very informative

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat.

What is the correct way of eating fruits?

IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.

If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.

In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.

So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You have heard people complaining - every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet etc - actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!

Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will not happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE : Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene - the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can you believe this? For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup, warm water or warm beer after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE': (THIS IS NOT A JOKE!) Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack . Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive...
