Hawking was a quick way of early immigrants with little skill or capital to earn a living. Street Hawker was thus a common sight in Singapore till 1930s when they were relocated into specially built food centres.
The sculpture show s a hawker selling home-make noodles with fish balls, a dish popular to this day. This hawker will attract customers by striking a hardwood rod against a bamboo stick, making a rhythmic “tick-tock” sound to announce his present. As such he is colloquially call a “tick-tock” man.
