Moulmein Emergency Preparedness Exercise 2012

Moulmein held her Emergency Preparedness Exercise on 4 March 2012 at Block 50 Dorset Road.

Through this exercise, residents learnt how to evacuate to the designate location in an orderly manner and also learnt some basic first-aid skill. The kids also enthusiastically participating in this exercise and are overwhelming to acquiring the skill of fight fighting and water shooting. Look at their joyful facial expression, you will know that they really enjoy there .

Madagascar periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus ) 长春花

Native to Madagascar. In the pharmaceutical industry, vincristine and vinblastine from the sap have proven to be effective in the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma. It is traditionally used to treat diabetes, hypertension, and as a disinfectant.

Golden Trumpet (Allamanda cathaartica) 金喇叭

Native to Brazil. Though highly toxic, it is still traditionally used to treat jaundice, and as a purgative. Vapours from the boiling leaves are inhaled to relieve coughs and clear nasal passages.

Adoption of Ren Ci Nursing Home for The Aged

Official Adoption Ceremony of Ren Ci Nursing Home for The Aged jointly by Moulmein Farrer Park RC, Moulmein Kent Ville RC, Moulmein Owen RC & Pek Kio CC WEC. The ceremony is held at Ren Ci Auditorium on 12 February 2012.

Guest-of –Honour is Grassroots Adviser Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Transport and 2nd Minister for Foreign Affairs, MP for Moulmein-Kallang GRC.

Lim Bo Seng Memorial
The Memorial was built in 1954 in memory of Major-General Lim Bo Seng who led Force 136, an anti-Japanese resistance movement, He was captured by e Japanese in Ipoh in 1944 and died the same year during detention, His body was brought back from Malaya after the war and he was buried at MacRitchie Reservoir with full military honors.

Indian National Army Marker
The world War Two Plaque marks the site of the Indian National Army memorial which was destroyed after the war, It was erected in 1995 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II and is part of a series of 11 World War II sites in Singapore.

The Cenotaph
The Cenotaph was built in memory of those who gave their lives in World War Two ( 1941 - 1945).

Tan Kim Seng Fountain
The Victorian cast-iron fountain has been part of Singapore's urban landscape since 19 May 1882. It was built by the Municipal Council to commemorate tan Kim Seng, a leading trader and philanthropist.

Civilian War Memorial

The Memorial is dedicated to all those who perished during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore (1942 - 1945). Four pillars soar to over 70 meters symbolizing the shared war experiences of the Chinese, Indians, Malays and other races. The remains of unknown victims are interred beneath the monument.

Among the civilians who lost their lives were numerous Chinese targeted by the Japanese under the Sook Ching ( Literally "to purge" or " to eliminate") operations. on 18 February 1942, large numbers of Chinese were forcibly assembled at designated mass screening centres. Many were unjustly accused of involvement in anti-Japanese acfivities, or arbitrarily condemned. No one will ever know how many were taken away and massacred. Unofficial figures put the number of dead at about 50,000.

Trunk
Massive and is thickly covered with long woody twigs which bear the flowers and fruits.

Habit
Deciduous and sheds its leaves every six months. Flowers and fruits can usually be seen on the tree all year round.

Uses
Hindus use the fragrant flowers for prayer and worship. The hard shells from the fruit are used to make containers and utensils.

Flowers
Flowers are large and fragrant with 6 thick fleshy waxy curved petals, yellow on outside and pink inside.

Fruits
The fruits are large, round and hard, reddish to greyish brown, and very much resemble cannonballs. They grow to around 20 cm in diameter and have thin woody shell filled with a soft slightly smelly pulp containing numerous seed. Upon ripening, the fruit disintegrate and the seeds are dispersed.
